Studio Surplus

How it works

Designer pieces from the trade, handled with care.

Verified design-trade studios sell their surplus pieces to designers and other buyers. Studio Surplus sits in between: we take payment, hold it until delivery, arrange the handoff or freight, and pay the studio after.

For buyers

Buy from the trade, with care.

Studio Surplus is the merchant of record: you buy from us, and the studio is paid only after delivery.

  1. Browse pieces from verified studios

Every piece comes from a design-trade studio we have verified. Narrow by size — width, depth and height — material, style, quantity and location.

  2. Pay securely at checkout

You pay Studio Surplus, not the studio, and we hold your payment until delivery. A 5% service fee is shown at checkout before you pay.

  3. Choose how it reaches you

Pick the delivery that suits the piece and the room.

    Local pickup
Free. Collect from the studio and confirm the handoff with a QR code.
    Freight
Blanket-wrapped, estimated at checkout from distance and size, with a 7–14 day delivery window.
    White-glove
Placed in the room of your choice, unpacked, with debris removed. Required for shipped pieces over $5,000.
  4. Check it on arrival

If something is wrong, report it within 48 hours of delivery, with photos — not as described, or damaged in transit. All sales are otherwise final.

For interior designers, stagers, showrooms, manufacturers, hospitality and contract, architects and dealers.

Open your studio
  1. Open your studio in thirty seconds

Tell us who you are and what you have. No documents — choose a password and your studio is open.

  2. Send us your list

Attach the spreadsheet you already keep, as it is, and we will import it for you — or start from our inventory template (Excel, on the sign-up form).

  3. List your pieces

Photograph a piece on your phone and Quick add suggests the details, or upload any spreadsheet.

  4. Get verified

You can start listing straight away. Your pieces go live once you are verified.

  5. Stay anonymous

Questions

Frequently asked.

Who can sell on Studio Surplus?

Verified design-trade businesses: interior designers, home stagers, showrooms, manufacturers, hospitality and contract firms, architects and dealers. Opening a studio takes thirty seconds.

How are studios verified?

We confirm every seller is a design-trade business before buyers see their pieces. Studios can list while we check; their pieces go live once they are verified.

Will buyers know which studio I am?

Not unless you choose. Studios are anonymous by default: buyers see a public name you pick. You can choose to show your business instead. Your email, phone and street address are never public.

What fees does a buyer pay?

The item price plus a 5% service fee, shown at checkout before you pay, and the cost of freight or white-glove delivery if you choose it. Local pickup is free.

What does it cost to sell?

Listing is free. When a piece sells, we deduct a commission of 15%, 12%, 10% or 8% of the item price, depending on your plan. Founding sellers pay 0% on their first three sales, then two points less for life.

How does delivery work?

Choose free local pickup with a QR handoff; blanket-wrap freight, estimated at checkout from distance and size, with a 7–14 day window; or white-glove, placed in the room of your choice, unpacked, with debris removed. White-glove is required for shipped pieces over $5,000.

How are studios paid?

Through Stripe. You connect your bank account in your studio's settings using Stripe's secure sign-up — Studio Surplus never sees or keeps your bank details, and Stripe handles the tax forms. You receive your asking price minus commission; delivery and the buyer's service fee are paid by the buyer on top.

When is the studio paid?

The buyer pays at checkout and Studio Surplus holds the payment. We release it to you 48 hours after confirmed delivery — the window in which a buyer can report damage or a piece not as described — or as soon as the buyer's code is scanned at a local pickup. If a claim is open, the payment waits until it is resolved. From release, Stripe usually takes about two business days to reach your bank.

What if a piece arrives damaged or not as described?

Report it within 48 hours of delivery, with photos, as "not as described" or "damaged in transit". All sales are otherwise final.

Can I make an offer or ask for a piece?

Not yet. Making an offer, and the Wanted board — where you post what you are looking for — are coming soon.
